I know some people don’t want to think about fall just yet, are trying to hang on the last few days of summer – but it’s right around the corner! For me, once July rolled around, I already started browsing Pinterest for fall fashion inspiration (yea I know, I’m early). Whether you like it or not, colder weather will be upon us soon (hey East Coasters!), so I rounded up a few must-have items for your fall wardrobe, and will most certainly be in mine, too! Now, I hate breaking the bank – so I’m going to try and stay below the $100 mark for most items on this list. I’m also going to delve into WHY these basics can be interchangeable, and really the essentials for your fall (and fall into winter) wardrobe!
1. Basic, Neutral Sweater Dress
I LIVED in my favorite gray sweater dress from last fall that I found at Forever 21. Not only was it incredibly affordable, but it was comfortable, warm, and looked great on its own, or paired with a leather jacket. I’ve worn this dress with your basic white Adidas sneakers, over the knee boots, booties, and my Valentino flats – and they all worked perfectly with this basic sweater dress! Seriously, this is the quickest and easiest outfit, but looks very chic paired with high boots and shades. You don’t even have to spend a lot for this piece – I definitely fully support picking up your basics at Forever 21, H&M, etc.
2. Neutral Bomber Jacket
Okay, so you’ve probably heard the word on the street: bomber jackets are the “it” staple for the season. Something about throwing on a bomber over your shoulders can make any outfit a little edgier. It embodies the “laid-back IT girl” and the “I’m not really trying” chicness that so many strive for, and babes like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid have nailed. I’m a big fan of neutrals because of their versatility, so I try to stick with buying neutrals for outerwear before I go for something more fun (see below). I rounded up a few budget-friendly bomber jacket options in neutral colors for fall, like black, olive, and burgundy.
3. Fun Bomber Jacket
Okay…so you’re growing tired of neutrals and you want to spice up your wardrobe with something unique. Why not pair a fun print with a staple? These bomber jackets are a little different and a little on the wild side; they definitely stand out from the crowd. I know wild prints are hard to incorporate into everyday looks except for as an occasional piece, so I tried to stick with less expensive options (they have a bunch at Forever & Urban with unique prints!)
4. Trendy Sweatpants (yes, it’s a thing)
Everyone likes being comfortable. That’s why it’s important to invest in a pair of trendy sweatpants for those days when you don’t really want to try piecing together an outfit, but still want to go out looking put-together. Throw on a plain t-shirt, a pair of trendy sweatpants, and white sneakers and you’re out the door! In my opinion, a lot more comfortable than denim and will keep you warm on those chilly, fall nights. My favorite brand for comfy sweats is Sundry – the quality is amazing and the price tag is usually around $100 or below. If you’re not sold on the idea of “fashionable sweatpants”, I’d start by purchasing an inexpensive pair from Forever 21 or H&M (I’ve linked a few below!)
5. Fall Vests
Layering, layering, layering. You know this season – some days are hot, others are freezing, autumn can never make up its mind! Being comfortable and creative with layering is a fashion girl tip that will remain relevant for years. I tend to prefer long vests, which I layer over turtlenecks or long-sleeved tops, but I also love my fur vest I bought last season from Club Monaco. Seriously – how perfect would this vest look over a striped top, and with these grey OTK boots?!
6. Classic Bootie or Loafer
Booties are perfect to throw on in the fall with jeans, leggings, a skirt, etc. I personally stick with the classic black, because I think that goes with so many different looks. I personally love Tory Burch booties, and usually run to Nordstrom to grab a new pair for the season. I linked some of my favorite below – ASOS has a lot of good picks, as well. This season I’ve also been really into loafers (or mules) ever since the Gucci Princetown Loafer became so popular last fall. A classic, black loafer can make any outfit look more sophisticated. Think over-sized sweater, maxi skirt, and mules – basic but on point!
7. Over the Knee Boots
Yesss the season has finally come where I can return to wearing my all-time favorite shoe! Over the knee boots can really dress up any outfit, especially if they have a heel. My go-to outfit for the fall and winter is a sweater dress & over the knee boots – easy, classic, and fashionable! Seriously, though, take a peek at my posts from last season here, here, here, and here!
8. Leather Leggings
I love leggings but I know they’re not always socially acceptable to wear in the fashion world. Sure, they’re comfortable, but I probably wouldn’t wear them out everyday. When I want to change it up a bit, I love my leather leggings, which are essentially the same as cotton leggings, but a little fancier 😉
Last fall, I regularly wore my two Janessa Leone hats – one in a dark blue, and the other in a marbled grey with a burgundy strip around the crown. Bad hair day? Yea, throw on a hat. Iremember envying this one picture of Kendall Jenner sporting a bright red hat with a black and white striped top, and I thought, “damn that’s cool”. Ever since then – I’ve been hooked on seeing how I can incorporate different style and color hats into my everyday wardrobe. The fedora is a perfect fall staple.
10. Your Favorite Denim
Investing in a great pair of jeans (or five) is key because you can wear them throughout any season. During the fall and winter, I choose to stick with darker washes. I’ve found that denim from Forever 21 and similar retailers doesn’t fit me as well as other brands specifically known for their denim (Rag & Bone, AG, Current/Elliott, FRAME, DL1961, J Brand, etc.). Choose to invest in classic jeans and they will last you years.
11. A Favorite Chunky Knit
There’s nothing like cozying up in an over-sized sweater while drinking hot cider during the crisper months. Find a sweater that you love, and I promise you’ll live in it throughout the fall and winter. My favorite brand for over-sized and cowl neck sweaters is definitely Free People, they have the best selection!
12. White Sneakers
I’m so glad the classic Stan Smith sneaker is back (not that it ever really went anywhere, but it definitely seems really relevant with the fashion girls right now). Pair a classic, clean white sneaker with a maxi dress and leather jacket, with jeans and a t-shirt, or with a leather mini skirt and sweater.
13. A Pretty Layering Cami
So I recently was browsing at my favorite boutique Alba in Hoboken, NJ (stay tuned for a fun event we’re planning together in the fall!) and I came across their selection of CAMI NYC tanks. These are very popular with the top bloggers, in particular with Arielle of Something Navy. The pretty, lace detail on these camis adds to their appeal, making them appear dainty, soft, and perfect for layering. Pair one of these camis with a chunky cardigan, jeans, and sneakers during the daytime, then throw on leather leggings, a blazer, and strappy heels for an easy day-to-night transitional look. I’ve also linked a few more camis that are more budget-friendly.
14. Round Sunnies
Recently I’ve noticed round sunglasses becoming more and more popular – not only with bloggers, but even browsing through my Instagram. Everyone seems to be wearing this style! I loved this post from Arielle of Something Navy where she flaunts her Sunday Somewhere round sunnies. My favorite round sunnies are definitely made by Ray-Ban, which I’ve linked below.
15. A Bold Lip Color
Fall means dark shades of red (my favorite!) I love burgundy, deep auburn, and dark hues of berry and wine. Hence, the name of my blog! This season is the perfect time to try a fun, new lip color in one of these dark shades.
I thought I would share with you a little insight into how I gain my inspiration for the fall season. I usually find fashion inspiration when browsing Pinterest, the web, etc. but also by scoping out how popular retailers style their collections. Seriously, go check out the lookbook’s at Intermix & The Outnet and you won’t disagree! Note: Please read image source / disclaimer below
